Structures: Reflecting Cosmos

  • WOOK + LATTUADA GALLERY 10 East 33rd Street New York, NY, 10016 United States (map)

Artists: Susan Austad

WOOK + LATTUADA GALLERY, New York, proudly presents Susan Austad: STRUCTURES: REFLECTING COSMOS, an exhibition of large relief sculpture with light effects.

Humble materials (wire mesh and stained paper lit from behind) shimmer in space. The works look ephemeral, a reflection of the constant processes of physical change.

The work is inspired by transformations--the fire and magma from volcanos that re¬form the landscape; glaciers "calving" to become icebergs that then melt into the sea; nebula, created in gases in the vast winds of exploded stars, are lit by new stars formed within them. And the same laws of symmetry correspond in the microcosmos: atoms connect, share electrons, form molecules, interact in complex systems and transmute to energy. Basic formulas and processes apply universally.

Susan Austad was raised in northern Minnesota.  She received a B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin, studied painting at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and finished the "Fourth Year Painting Course" at the School of Visual Arts (before a degree program was in place). In 2000 she completed a M.A. in Art in the Venice Program from New York University.

Important articles on Austad's work include "The Landscape and the Material," by Vivien Raynor (New York Times); a review of "Homage to the Bag," at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, NYC, a large photograph in the N.Y. Post for a review of an "Artist's Space" Show, plus several reviews of solo shows in the Dominican Republic.

Her works are in collections in the United States and abroad, including: IBM Sterling Company, New York City; Whitney Communications, New York City; Agnes Gund, a collector on the Board of MoMA; and Colgate Palmolive Company, Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic.

Susan Austad lives and works in New York City.
